FAQ

No more wondering as I answer the most popular questions I get asked as a literary agent

How long should I wait to follow up after submitting my full manuscript? Each agent is different on their timeframe; however, I recommend around a 3-6 months range.

Do I need a platform if I’m writing fiction? Any platform is nice to have, but honestly you don’t need to stress about that when writing fiction as to opposed to nonfiction.

What should I look for in an agent? I suggested researching the literary agency as a whole making sure number one, that it’s legit/established and secondly, that the agent has a solid backing behind them. It doesn’t matter if the agent is at a senior, junior, or newbie level. It’s important to know their team.

Is there a certain word count that I should follow? Yes, depending on the type of book that you are writing there are guidelines for word count. For example, here is a ballpark range of genres that I represent - Nonfiction 75-90K, Adult fiction (commercial) 80-99K, YA 60-80K, YA SF 70-90K.

Are Twitter Pitch Events even worth it? Absolutely! So many agents have signed their clients thanks to these events including myself. I suggest starting right when the event begins and have a solid pitch, which you should have written down before the event. Pro tip!

Can I pitch you my self-published book? Pitching your work that is already out in the world as a self-published book is not the right way to go. Unless it’s a mega big hit, then that’s a different story. I would recommend shopping a brand new book.

How long should a synopsis be? A synopsis should be three pages, double spaced.

If my current agent isn’t selling my book does that mean I signed with a bad agent? Not at all! This is such a subjective industry and I truly mean that. If an agent is keeping that line of communication open and sending your book out to editors then that agent is doing their job. Unfortunately, signing with a literary agent doesn’t guarantee a book deal, but having someone who is just as excited about your project as you and is ready to put in the effort to advocate for your book is a total win.

Is nudging after a submission a big “no no”? Absolutely not! However, if it’s daily or weekly then that’s a red flag. You are totally welcome to check in on your query and be able to have a status, but please know all agents are different when it comes to communicating. Just make sure to follow the submission guidelines.

Do I have to pay upfront when signing with an agent? No, agents work on a percentage base which is typically 15% when the book is sold. If an agent or agency is asking for money upfront, then I would highly recommend going elsewhere for representation.
